A morning wedding on St. John in the US Virgin Islands
July 31, 2010
Brides and grooms that want the best wedding photographs possible always ask me this question, "What is the best time for a beach wedding on St. John?"
My first answer to this question is: the best time of day to get married is either in the morning or late afternoon when the sunbathers have left the beach, it is less crowded and a bit cooler. My personal advice is that the morning time is the best for a beach destination St. John wedding, your photographs will be amazing at this time of day. My reasons for recommending a morning beach wedding on St. John is:
Picture Perfect Destination Wedding
Envisioning your beach wedding on St. John, the colors of the ocean are turquoise and the sky is a deep beautiful blue, and the sand between your toes is white. This is a perfect description of a morning wedding photograph on St. John. The Caribbean colors are the most vibrant and saturated in the morning.
The main reason that I recommend a morning wedding on St. John is because of the colors of the ocean, sky, and light: they will match your picture perfect idea of a destination beach wedding in the US Virgin Islands. Now all of this is just a photographers observation, it is not fact and might change due to weather: the color of the ocean in the morning is a vibrant turquoise color on St. John, while during the evening the color will most likely be a deeper blue. The sky in the morning will be a saturated blue and in the evening there tends to be a few more clouds. The light during the morning is beautifully descriptive, almost crisp, and great for portraits.
The main thing that bride and grooms do not like about a morning wedding is just that, it is in the morning. There are a lot of non-morning people out there and I know what you're all thinking: who wants to get up early on their vacation, not to mention ask all of their wedding guest to get up early for the wedding?! All this said, you will be up early anyway because you will be on beautiful St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, gone to bed early from all the fresh air and sunshine the day before, and more importantly it is your wedding day and you're excited!!! Really, you will be awake early, no matter what time your wedding will take place, why not get married when your wedding photographs will be the most beautiful!?!
Wedding Details
A morning wedding will allow you to celebrate your wedding day all day long! One of the main concerns a bride has about a morning wedding on St. John are the details; flowers, hair, make-up, reception, and getting this all together before 9 a.m. Please let me reassure you that it is all possible and has been done many times. The island has wonderful beauticians that will arrive at your private villa or hotel fist thing in the morning to do your hair and make-up, Passion Flowers will deliver your wedding flowers to your ceremony location and a great idea for a morning reception is to have it catered at your villa as a brunch with champagne.
Cinnamon Bay Beach and Sugar Mill Ruins Wedding
July 19, 2010

Recently, I photographed a morning wedding and just love these pictures that I made at Cinnamon Bay Beach on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Odile contacted me in June about her elopement plans with Nate, and was interested in adding a little twist to her beach wedding photography session.
Odile's idea was to get married first on the beach, in the morning to show off the saturated turquoise colors of the Caribbean Sea and then change locations to the adjacent Sugar Mill Stone Ruins.
She was interested in the unusual backdrop that the Ruins provide in combination with a beautiful tropical beach backdrop for her wedding photography. The combination of the two came out fantastic! I prefer the morning light for the ceremony: its more vivid, saturated and soft. The deep blue sky and turquoise water truly shines in the morning light. The historical Sugar Mill Ruins provide a wonderful backdrop for candid photographs and provide the happy couple with an opportunity to create a little history for themselves. Cinnamon Bay has so much to offer: one of the largest and most beautiful beaches on St. John, crystal clear turquoise water and the old stone sugar ruins are just a short walk from the beach. Cinnamon Bay is my new favorite location on St. John for a wedding ceremony.

Sunset beach wedding on Trunk Bay
July 13, 2010
One of the most magical times of day to photograph a wedding on the beach is at sunset on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The most popular beach for a relaxing sunset wedding on St. John is at Trunk Bay Beach. Trunk Bay is located in the National Park and has received recognition as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by Conde Nast Traveler magazine and National Geographic Society. Trunk Bay became part of the National Park in the 1950's when Laurence S. Rockefeller donated 5000 acres of land to the National Park Service. Thus, preserving this pristine place for everyone. Timing is everything when photographing a sunset wedding on St. John because of our location to the equator the sun will set quickly. The light on the evening of June 26, 2010 was truly amazing and I was able to capture some incredible wedding sunset photographs of a small wedding ceremony with about 30 wedding guest. Please view a few of the photographs below.
